If you're using Shopify, Wix, or WooCommerce, recover abandoned cart sales before they're lost! Our Automation Path Builder helps you send an email or SMS message based on the shopping cart status of your customers. You can customize your communication to send based on conditions, like location, order value, or total amount spent, and include a discount code to help close the sale.
Please note that Squarespace isn't compatible with abandoned cart paths.
 | Design tip: To prevent your customers from receiving too many abandoned cart emails, we recommend only having one abandoned cart path active at a time. |
Create an Automation Path for an abandoned cart
Follow these steps to create an automation path using a pre-built template and select one of the following templates:
- Abandoned cart reminder: SMS - Select this option to include both email and SMS marketing messages in your abandoned cart path.
- Abandoned cart reminder: Location - Select this option to offer free shipping to abandoned cart customers based on their location.
- Abandoned cart reminder: Value - Select this option to offer discounts to abandoned cart customers based on the value of their cart items.
Create your email or SMS message content
Your message content is fully customizable! It can be a simple "you have items in your cart" message, or use it to send an incentive to complete the purchase by offering a discount, exclusive content, or a special webpage. Emails provide enough space for the most content flexibility, and SMS messages have a higher likelihood to be read and engaged with.
- Click the three dots on the Send an email or Send an SMS step in your path, and select "Edit."

- Use the email or SMS message editor to customize your abandoned cart message content:
- Email - Use the email editor to customize your content. If you need help getting started, try using the AI Content Generator while you're editing your text. You also have the option to copy an existing email draft or sent email. Your message can include multiple images, links, and larger blocks of text, and you can pull in product blocks and discount codes from your Shopify, Wix, or WooCommerce store. Learn more.
Note: The[[product.name OR “Product Name”]] placeholder block is designed to pull in the cart items for each unique customer. You’re unable to delete it.
Design tip: Offering a discount can give your customers the reason they need to hit that "checkout" button! The Discount code layout lets you select a discount code that exists in your Shopify, Wix, or WooCommerce account—just add the layout into your email and then select the discount code from the Settings button in the path builder.

- SMS - Enter the content of your text message, or use the AI Content Generator to help get you started. Your message can include a single URL, but doesn't allow for images. Longer messages are broken into individual text messages that impact your billing. Learn more.
Note: Be careful not to delete the [[AbandonedCartURL]] placeholder in your message. It’s designed to bring each unique customer directly to their own cart. If deleted, you have to delete the SMS step from your path and add a new one.

- Click Save and Close in the upper right-hand corner of the editor to return to the Path builder.
Repeat the steps for each email or SMS message in your path. You can add more email or SMS messages by dragging one from the Send actions section of the path builder.
(Optional) Customize your path with additional steps
The abandoned cart reminder templates are fully useable as they are—you just have to add your email or SMS content—but you can further build out your path for your audience:
Activate your abandoned cart path
When you're ready, all that's left to do is activate your abandoned cart communication:
- Click the Activate button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Once your path is activated, you’re brought to the details page where you can review your performance and reporting information.
