Adding UTM Parameters to Emails

When you know where your leads are coming from, you can use that data to build better campaigns. UTM parameters are a reliable and powerful way to ensure you get that information.

This article will detail how to add UTM parameters to emails.

Lead Gen & CRM automatically adds UTM parameters to the links of all emails. By default, the parameter is utm_source=sharpspring. This code can be changed.

To manually add a UTM parameter to an email, create or edit an email from the Email tab in the left toolbar. 

 

Adding Links in the New Editor

Non-Button Text

Complete these steps in the new email editor for a text element that is not a button:

  1. Double-click in a text area of the email and highlight a piece of text.
  2. Click the Link icon in the email content editor menu.



  3. Enter the following in the URL field of the popup that appears: 
    https://www.yourwebsite.com/?utm=addyouruniqueparameter
     
    Note: Replace www.yourwebsite.com with your own web page address. For UTM parameters, addyouruniqueparameter can be whatever you want it to be. UTM parameters are case-sensitive. Google's URL builder can help you generate parameters.

  4. Click OK



  5. Finish modifying your email and then click Continue.

 

Button text

Complete these steps in the new email editor when adding parameters to a button element:

  1. Double-click in the text area of a button.
  2. Under the Content tab, Action section, enter the following in the URL field:
    https://www.yourwebsite.com/?utm=addyouruniqueparameter
     
    Note: Replace www.yourwebsite.com wi your own web page address. For UTM parameters, addyouruniqueparameter can be whatever you want it to be. UTM parameters are case-sensitive. Google's URL builder can help you generate parameters.

  3. Click Continue



 

Adding Links in the Classic Editor

Complete these steps in the classic email editor:

  1. Double-click in a text area of the email and highlight a piece of text.
  2. Click the Link icon in the email content editor menu.

  3. Enter the following in the URL field in the pop-up window that appears: 
    https://www.yourwebsite.com/?utm=addyouruniqueparameter
     
    Note: Replace www.yourwebsite.com with your own web page address. For UTM parameters, addyouruniqueparameter can be whatever you want it to be. UTM parameters are case-sensitive. Google's URL builder can help you generate parameters.

  4. Click Save.

  5. Click Save again and send the email.
