Understanding Generated Account and Opportunity Names

Article: 000050525
Updated: July 10, 2024

When you create opportunities via automation, Lead Gen & CRM automatically generates names for the opportunity. These names will be different from one another, and the generation process is centered around whether created opportunities have associated company names.

This article will provide insight into how these created opportunities are named.

Opportunity Naming Logic

Opportunities can be created through the pipeline itself, or through automation. When creating opportunities through automation, Lead Gen & CRM will automatically generate names for the created opportunities.

When a lead is associated with an account

When opportunities are created through automation, opportunity names are based on whether the lead is associated with an account that has a company name. Regardless of whether the lead has an associated account and company name, the generated opportunity names will be listed alongside a timestamp that indicates when the opportunity was created.

The logic for opportunity name generation, when the lead is associated with an account, is as follows:

 Opportunity

Description

Example

Has Company
Name

Opportunities with an associated
company name will have the company
name as its automatically generated
name.

No Company
Name

If a lead does not have an associated
company name, the opportunity name
will be automatically generated with
the automation workflow name.

Be aware that an opportunity's name can be changed after it is automatically generated. If auto-generated opportunity names are not producing the desired results, consider updating your accounts' company names.

For example, depending on your instance and your needs, an account's company name can be the name of a business or the first and last name of an individual. Read Configuring Account Company Information to learn more about updating your accounts' company details.

When a lead is not associated with an account

When opportunities are created through automation, and the lead is not associated with an account, you can choose to use "Auto-generate" in the account and opportunity name or set a prefix. This will first create an account name, and then the opportunity name will be created to match the account name.

The logic for account/opportunity name generation, when the lead is not already associated with an account, is as follows:

 Select Prefix

Description

Example

Auto-generated refix

Choose to generate all new accounts/opportunities with the name prefix "Auto-generated" alongside the unique timestamp.

Set your own prefix

Choose to generate all new accounts/opportunities with a set prefix alongside the unique timestamp. Enter the prefix you want all accounts/opportunities generated with.

Be aware that an opportunity's name can be changed after it is automatically generated.
