System fields (First Name, Last Name, Email, etc.) are important because they determine the information attached to leads. These fields are also tied to major platform functions, such as form fields and email merge variables. If you need a field that is not built in, for example, "Favorite Color" or "Preferred Operating System", you can create custom fields.
