Add or remove tags from a specific contact

Article: 000037408
Updated: October 24, 2025

Add new tags or remove existing tags from an individual contact while editing a contact record

Tags are labels you can add to your contacts that help you segment your audience. If you've created all your tags ahead of time, it's quick and easy to apply them to an individual contact as needed. However, new tags can also be created simultaneously when you edit your contact. Tags are also easy to remove when they are no longer applicable.

  1. From the Contacts page, search for the contact you want to edit.
  2. Place your cursor over the contact's name and click the Preview (eye icon) button.
Note: Clicking the contact's name brings you directly into their contact record (see step 4).

  3. From the panel on the right-hand side of the page, click the View full details button.

  4. From the Details tab, click on the Tags header to expand the section and view any existing tags that are applied to your contact.

  5. Click anywhere in the Tag field to add or remove tags.
Note: Clicking the Gear icon opens the Tag Manager, where you can fully manage all the tags within your account.
  6. Select a tag from the drop-down menu, or type a few characters of the tag name to narrow your search. To create a new tag, type the name of the tag and click the "Create new [tag name]" option. To remove an existing tag, click on the X on the right-hand side of the tag name. When you're finished, click the check mark to close the editing options.
Note: You can create up to 500 unique tags within your account, and each tag has a maximum limit of 255 characters.

When you send your next email, you can use tags to filter your list by only sending your email to the contacts that have the tag, or excluding your tagged contacts from receiving it.
