Troubleshooting IMAP Sync Errors

When syncing IMAP, there may be times when the process results in error. Before contacting Lead Gen & CRM Support, you may want to troubleshoot your IMAP sync results.

General Mailbox Errors

The following errors can occur under general circumstances during IMAP syncing:
 

 Error Message Error Meaning Suggested Resolution 
 

Application-specific
password required (Failure)

 

Two-factor authentication is turned on for the Gmail account.

 

Create an application-specific password for Lead Gen & CRM.
Use that created password
for Gmail's two-factor authentication service.

 
 

[CLOSED] IMAP connection
broken (Server response)

 

The IMAP connection was broken while talking with the server. The server unexpectedly closed the connection.  

 

This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator. 

 
 

Could not find outbox

 

When IMAP attempted to sync with Google, it could not locate an outbox.

 Create an outbox in your Gmail account. 
 

Deadline exceeded

 

IMAP stopped syncing mail in the mailbox after encountering a timeout. 

 IMAP will resume syncing on the next run. 
 

[Folder name]
does not exist

 

The folder mapped for an inbox or outbox does not exist on the server.

 

Map to a valid folder or
create a folder with the listed name in your email account.

 
 

Mailbox does not exist:
[Mailbox name]

 

The mailbox mapped for an inbox or outbox does not exist on the server.

 

Map to a valid mailbox or
create a mailbox with the listed name in your email account. 

 
 

No inbox or
outbox specified

 

The Custom Provider option was chosen for IMAP syncing, but an inbox or outbox was not mapped.

 Map an inbox or an outbox in your email account. 
 

No such host as
[Hostname]

 There is no DNS record for the given hostname.  

Provide the correct hostname, or fix the DNS for the current hostname.

 
 

TLS/SSL failure
for [Web address]:

SSL negotiation failed

 TLS negotiation has failed. 

This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.  

 

 



Failed to Log In to Account: Authentication Errors

The following errors can occur when account authentication issues happen during IMAP syncing:
 

 Error Message Error Meaning Suggested Resolution 
 

Authentication failed

 

Account has an incorrect username or password.

 Use the correct credentials. 
 

Empty username
or password

 The username or password was left empty.  Use the correct credentials.  
 

 IMAP: Connection closed

 

While the IMAP connection was waiting on authentication, the server closed the connection.  

 This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.    
 

Invalid credentials (Failure)

 

Account has an incorrect username or password.

 Use the correct credentials.   
 

Invalid IMAP username
or password

 

Account has an incorrect username or password.

 Use the correct credentials. 
 

LOGIN authentication failed

 

Account has an incorrect username or password.

 Use the correct credentials.   
 

LOGIN bad name or
user password

 

Account has an incorrect username or password.

 Use the correct credentials.  
 

LOGIN failed

 

Account has an incorrect username or password.

 Use the correct credentials.   
 

Password must be
changed before IMAP
login permitted

 

The host requires a password change in order to enable IMAP.

 

Change the password and reattempt IMAP sync with the new credentials.

 
 

PLAIN not supported
by 
the server

 

The server does not support PLAIN logins, which is required for all logins other than Gmail open authorization. 

 This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.    
 

There was an issue with
your IMAP settings

 

A general error stating that there are incorrect settings for an account or IMAP connection.

 

Double-check the information and credentials you are using. Re-attempt the sync process. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.

 
 

XOAUTH2 authentication
error (400)

 

Open authorization failure when logging into Gmail accounts.

 

This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.  

 
 

Your account is not enabled
for IMAP use. Please visit
your Gmail settings page
and enable your account
for 
IMAP access. (Failure)

 IMAP has not been enabled on the target Gmail account.  Enable and set IMAP settings
in your Gmail account.
 

 



Failed to Log In to Account: Connection Errors

The following errors can occur when account connection issues happen during IMAP syncing:

I/O timeout

 It took too long to connect to the server. This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.

or is not yet valid

 The server certificate is expired. Use the self-signed certificate option or obtain a new certificate. 
 

DialWithDialerTLS:
[Web site]:
[Server address]:

Certificate is valid for
[Domains]

 The certificate on the server is not the domain name IMAP attempted to sync to. Use the self-signed certificate option. 
 

DialWithDialerTLS:
[Web site]:
[Server address]:

Certificate signed by
unknown authority

 Either a self-signed certificate or signed by an unknown authority. Use the self-signed certificate option. 
 

DialWithDialerTLS:
[Web site]:
[Server address]:
connect: 
Connection refused

 Server is running, but the given port is not open for connections. Change the host or port,
or wait until the server is repaired.
 
 

DialWithDialerTLS:
[Web site]:
[Server address]: 
read: Connection reset by peer

 

The IMAP connection was ended while talking with the server. The server decided to end the connection.

 This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.    
 

DialWithDialerTLS:

No such host

 Cannot obtain the IP address for the given name. There is DNS failure.  Provide the correct hostname, or fix the DNS for the current hostname. 
 

DialWithDialerTLS:

Oversized record received
with length [length]

 There is a TLS negotiation error.  This is an issue with your server. Contact your system administrator.
