Export subscribed and unsubscribed contacts from Mailchimp to import into Constant Contact

Import Mailchimp subscribers into Constant Contact and prevent accidental sends to those who've unsubscribed from your Mailchimp list

When you manage your email marketing lists with Constant Contact, you have access to tools that make it easy to target the right contacts, capture new contacts, automate your emails, and take action from your reporting. With so many great features, you'll be wondering why you didn't make the switch sooner!

To move your contacts from Mailchimp to Constant Contact, you have two options:

  • You can use the Constant Contact Mailchimp integration from the Integrations tab of your Constant Contact account
  • Or, you can manually export your contacts from Mailchimp and then import them into Constant Contact

The Constant Contact integration will pull in your contacts, tags, and media assets from your emails or other content. By contrast, within a manual export, if you want to import tags into Constant Contact, you can filter your Mailchimp contacts by tag and export them.

The Constant Contact integration will not allow for transferring unsubscribed contacts. You will need to manually export your unsubscribed contacts and then import them into Constant Contact.

Export contacts from Mailchimp

In Mailchimp, you need to export each individual list:

  1. In your Mailchimp account, click Audience.
  2. Click Export all contacts.

    Mailchimp dashboard audiences tab

    Note:
If you have more than one audience, click the Contacts drop-down at the top of the page to select the one you want to export.

  3. Click Export CSV

  4. When the export is ready, you'll receive an email alert. Click Download List Data in the email.

Repeat the steps for each individual audience in Mailchimp. Exported files are zipped and must be unzipped to access the contents. Once you've exported your contacts from Mailchimp, make sure your file is formatted correctly to avoid import errors, then import them into Constant Contact.

Export contacts by tag from Mailchimp

If your Mailchimp contacts are tagged, you can create the same tags in your Constant Contact account. Export your Mailchimp contacts by tag, then import the tagged contacts into Constant Contact. The tags from the file are matched to the tags in your account.

Note: If you use the Constant Contact Mailchimp integration instead of performing a manual export, tags will be brought in automatically with your contact import.

  1. From the Audience menu, select Tags.
  2. Click View for the tag you want to export.

    Tags page view button

    Note:
If you have more than one audience, click the Tags drop-down and select the one you want to export tags from.

  3. Use the checkboxes to select the contacts you want to include in your export.
  4. Click Export Segment

  5. Click Export CSV.

  6. Once your export is ready, you can download it in one of the following ways:

    • Click View Exports in the small pop-up that appears at the bottom of your screen.
    • Click Export History in the Audiences page dropdown menu.
    • Click the Download List Data button in the email you receive, which notifies you that the export is complete.

Open the exported file and designate a single column specifically for tags. Enter the tag you filtered by for each contact listed.

Note: If you have a large number of contacts listed in the file, you can type the tag into the cell below the column header, and then populate the remaining fields with the tag using the fill handle.

Repeat the steps for each tag and each audience you have stored in Mailchimp. Once you've added tags, make sure your file is formatted to prevent import errors, and then import your tagged contacts into Constant Contact.

Export unsubscribed contacts from Mailchimp

To stay compliant with the CAN-SPAM Act, it's an industry best practice to keep track of your unsubscribed contacts when you move to a new email marketing provider. This way, you prevent sending emails to anyone who's unsubscribed from your Mailchimp list when you start sending emails with Constant Contact.

In Mailchimp, you have to create a new segment for each list to capture your unsubscribes.

  1. In the Audience menu, click Segments
  2. Click Create Segment

    Audience page Segments section

Note: If you have more than one audience, click the Segments drop-down and select the one you want to export.

  3. Click the filter dropdown, then scroll down to Email Subscription Status.

    Select from the filter dropdown

  4. Set Filter parameters to include Contacts that are not subscribed.
  5. Click Use Segment.

  6. Enter a name for the segment and click Save & Exit

  7. Click on the new Segment

  8. Click Export Segment

  9. Click Export CSV.

  10. Once your export is ready, you can download it in one of the following ways:

    • Click View Exports in the small pop-up that appears at the bottom of your screen.
    • Click Export History in the Audiences main page dropdown menu.
    • Click the Download List Data button in the email you receive, which notifies you that the export is complete.

Repeat the steps for each individual audience you have in Mailchimp. Exported files are zipped and must be unzipped to access the contents. Once your unsubscribed contacts are exported from Mailchimp, enable the Advanced Email Permissions in your Constant Contact account and import the Unsubscribed contacts.
