Everything you need to know about having an EIN when you register your account for SMS marketing

An Employer ID Number (EIN) is used for identification and tax purposes and is assigned by the IRS to businesses operating within the United States. To obtain an EIN for your organization, you need to apply to the IRS.

An EIN isn't required to register for SMS Marketing through Constant Contact, but it gives you much more flexibility. Here's what you need to know about having an EIN:

Do I need an EIN to register for SMS marketing?

AN EIN isn't required to register for SMS marketing. However, if you register without an EIN, you are restricted to a maximum of 500 SMS messages per month.

As a Sole Proprietor, you can still apply for an EIN (see below). Once you have obtained one, you're eligible to choose a higher pricing tier for increased SMS messages (see below).

Why is it best that I have an EIN when using SMS?

Having an EIN is a requirement for sending over 500 SMS messages per month through Constant Contact. If you are a Sole Proprietor and want to send more than 500 SMS messages per month, you must first obtain an EIN from the IRS.

To apply for an EIN, please see the IRS website. It can take 4-6 weeks for approval after your application is submitted.

What do I do after I receive an EIN from the IRS?

Exclamation Point IconImportant: Newly created EIN numbers can take between 2 weeks and 90 days to populate in the IRS database that is referenced by The Campaign Registry (TCR), the third-party that helps mobile carriers verify SMS marketing traffic from business phone numbers. It's a good idea to wait at least 14 days after the date you receive your new EIN before registering for SMS to prevent a failed registration because your EIN hasn't updated in the IRS database yet.
