Add a mailto link in an email

Article: 000006445
Updated: March 11, 2025

Insert a link that opens a new email and pre-fills the email address, subject line, and body content

A mailto link is clickable text that automatically opens a new email in the reader's default email client, such as Outlook or Gmail, and pre-fills the "To" email address. Mailto links are great when you want emails on certain topics to go to a designated email address or employee. You can also customize your mailto link using HTML to pre-fill a subject line or email message to prompt your contacts for specific information. Additionally, you can use HTML to add CC or BCC email addresses to copy multiple people on the email.

Insert a mailto link

While editing your email:

  1. Highlight the text you want to link.
  2. Click the link icon and select Email from the drop-down.

  3. (Optional) Edit the text you want to display as the link.
  4. Enter the email address you want contacts to send to in the Email Address field.
Note: Only one email address can be entered. Use HTML to add a CC or BCC in order to copy multiple people on the email.
  5. Click Insert.

When your contacts click on the link, a new email will open in their default email client. All they have to do is fill in the subject line, enter their message, and click send.

Use HTML to add a subject line or body content

You can customize your mailto link so that when your contacts click on it, the subject line and message are already filled in for them. You can even add a CC or BCC. The mailto: portion of the code is automatically included, but not visible in the Email Address field in the editor.

  1. Once you've inserted a mailto link, click the linked text to open the toolbar.

  2. Click the link icon and select Edit from the drop-down.

  3. Place your cursor after the address in the Email Address field.
Note: You may notice that "mailto:" has been added to the beginning of the address. If it wasn't, you don't need to add it manually.

  4. For the fields you want to pre-fill, update the highlighted text below with your content in the code extension. You can add multiple email addresses to a CC or BCC by adding a comma.
    • CC - Add additional recipients to your email.
      ?cc=name@domain.com
    • BCC - Add additional recipients to your email that your contacts and CC'd recipients won't see.
      ?bcc=name@domain.com
    • Subject - Add a subject line to your email.
Note: Use "%20" to add a space between words in your subject line.
      ?subject=This%20is%20a%20subject
    • Body - Add a personalized message to the body of the email.
Note: Use "%20" to add a space between words in your body text. Use "%0A" to add a line break.
      ?body=This%20is%20body%20text
  5. Copy and paste the code extension to the end of the Email Address field. To add multiple extensions, such as the body in addition to the subject line, replace the question mark (?) with an ampersand (&) between the code extensions.
Example: les@ventureguitars.com?subject=Music%20Lessons&body=I'm%20interested%20in%20learning%20to%20play

Paste code extensions after email address in field

  1. Click Insert.

    Insert Button

Before sending your email, be sure to preview and send yourself a test to make sure everything looks the way you want it. When your contacts click on the mailto link, their default email client will open a new email with the pre-filled content.

Exclamation Point IconImportant: Mailto links aren't trackable and don't show up in the click reporting for your email.
