The Did Not Open report

Article: 000005289
Updated: February 18, 2025

Find out who isn't opening your emails and plan how to re-engage them

Email Plus IconReview your plan: Full access to this report is not available in all Constant Contact plans. If you don’t have full access, you may need to upgrade your plan.

It's important to get an idea of who isn't opening your emails, especially if you've sent to them several times. The "Did Not Open" report contains email addresses that we couldn't verify opened your email, and excludes any contacts who unsubscribed or bounced. You can use this list to reach out to them specifically and re-engage.

Exclamation Point IconImportant: There may be one or two faithful readers who still show up on the Did Not Open report—if someone has disabled images in their email client and didn't click any links in the email, they could land on the Did Not Open report.

Finding the report

The Reporting tab gives you a statistical overview of recent emails sent. The Did Not Open report is a level deeper.

  1. From the menu on the left, click Reporting.
  2. Scroll down to the Email campaigns table and click one of the hyperlinked numbers next to the email you want to review, like the one under the Opens column.

  3. Select "Did Not Open" from the drop-down.

Now you can see the contacts who we weren't able to confirm opened this email.

Light Bulb IconDid you know? You can easily create a list of contacts who haven't opened your emails over an extended period of time by using segmentation.

With this additional level of information, you'll be able to keep your list focused and high-performing. You can export this report to keep as a file on your computer.

Putting the info to work

The Did Not Open report allows you to do things like:

  • Identify hiccups - Perhaps the email address on file just isn't the best one to get in touch with your contact, or maybe your email is being filtered into a spam folder without the contact ever seeing it. Follow up with that person to find out.
  • Create a list - Creating a new list of these contacts allows you to:
  • Send a modified version of your last email - Since you wouldn't want to just resend these customers the email that didn't spark their interest the first time, try changing up the subject line and adding some extra content before resending.
  • Re-engage potentially uninterested readers - Send these contacts a special discount or offer. It also might be a good time to send a survey to get feedback on your content choices.
  • Send a reconfirm opt-in email - When you send a reconfirm opt-in email, you ask your contacts to make an active choice to stay on your list. Those who are reading will be happy to click. If contacts aren't responding, it's time to remove them.
