Clear a web browser's cache

Clearing the browser cache in the most commonly used web browsers

Your browser's cache temporarily stores images, scripts, and other website components while you browse. Clearing it occasionally can help some websites run smoothly and free up space on your computer's hard drive if it's running low.

Apple Safari

  1. Click on the Safari menu tab.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Check the box next to Show Develop menu in the menu bar.
  5. Now, click the Develop tab in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  6. Select Empty Caches.
  7. Exit and relaunch your browser.

Google Chrome

  1. Click the menu button in the upper right-hand corner of the browser.
  2. Click Delete browsing data.

  3. Select how far back you want to clear your cache. Click More > All time to clear it all.
  4. Uncheck all boxes except "Cached images and files."
  5. Click Delete data.

Microsoft Edge

  1. In the upper right-hand corner of the browser, click the three dots to open the menu, and select Settings.

  2. Click Privacy & security.
  3. Click Choose what to clear.

  4. Select the data you want to clear.
  5. Click Clear.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the menu button in the upper right-hand corner of the browser.
  2. Click Options.

  3. Click Privacy & Security and scroll down to the Cookies and Site Data section.
  4. Click Clear Data.

  5. Select the data you want to clear.
  6. Click Clear.
