Error message: A newer version of this email has already been saved

Troubleshooting errors when an email is being edited by multiple people at the same time or an individual has the email editor open in multiple browser tabs

We're sorry you're having trouble saving your content! This error typically happens when there are multiple instances of the email editor being used at the same time, and there are a couple of reasons why this can happen:

Reason for an outdated version of an email

Edits to an email are either saved by clicking "Save", or by relying on the automatic save feature in the editor, which saves after you've made three changes to your content. When an email is saved, it creates a new version of the email on our servers.

If there are two instances of an email open in the email editor, and changes are actively being made in both instances, the first one to save becomes the current version of the email. One editor is now making current changes to the email and the other editor is making changes to a previous version. When changes are saved in the previous version, the error is returned because a new version already exists.

Clicking Refresh in the error message updates the outdated version with the latest changes. You'll lose any changes you made before seeing the error, and the only way to get them back is to recreate them.

Prevent editing in multiple browsers or browser tabs

We've all done it! We've got so many browser tabs open, reminding us we need to do something, that sometimes we lose track and end up viewing the same webpage twice.

You'll see the error if you're making edits to the same email from two different browsers, like Firefox and Chrome, or if you have multiple tabs open in the same browser opened to the editor.

To prevent the error from occurring, save the changes in the browser or browser tab you want to use going forward and close the other browser or tab.

Prevent editing by multiple people at the same time

Sometimes, with the best of intentions, two people end up working on the same project independently and don't realize the other is working on it too. You may be logged in to the same account using the same username and password, or the account may have multiple user roles enabled so that you're logging into the same account as someone else is, with different usernames and passwords.

You'll see the error if the other person working on the email has already saved changes. Since they saved the email first, you end up working in an "older" version of the email. You can even end up seeing the error multiple times if you hit the Refresh button and start editing again while the other person has made an additional save.

To prevent the error from occurring, communication with the other parties who may be editing is key.
