Create a Facebook Lookalike Audience to use with an Ad or Lead Ad

Create a target audience for a Facebook and Instagram Ad or Lead Ad, that Facebook considers similar to your current list of contacts

Use your current contact list to find new leads, customers, or supporters, when you create Facebook and Instagram Ads and Lead Ads. Facebook looks at your contacts with Facebook accounts and then finds Facebook users, with similar characteristics, that aren't already part of your list. Your resulting audience resembles your current contacts, and you can market to them with similar messaging.
 

 



 

  1. While creating a Facebook and Instagram Ad or Lead Ad, click Edit next to Select Audience.


     
  2. Select a Category Type for your ad. To prevent credit, employment, or housing discrimination, Facebook removes the ability to target ads by gender, age, or interests, and also the use of lookalike audiences when you select the "Housing," "Credit," or "Employment" option. If you select the "None" option and Facebook reviews your ad and determines that it is a credit, employment, or housing ad, they can decline to publish your ad.   3. Click Select an audience type > Lookalike Audience.

  4. Click "Create a new audience."
    Note: If you don't yet have a Facebook Ad Account linked to your Facebook Business Account, you're prompted to connect it first. Learn more.

  5. Select the lists you want to create a Lookalike Audience from. You should have at least 300 contacts combined across your different lists, but for best results, Facebook recommends having at least 500 contacts.

  6. Select the country for your audience.
  7. Give your audience a name so you can recognize it in your account later.
  8. Click Create audience

  9. Your Lookalike Audience begins to process, and it can take Facebook about three to six hours to run their algorithm to create your audience. Click Save to finish creating the rest of your ad.

You don't have to wait for your audience to finish processing to click the Publish button for your ad. Your ad won't be seen until Facebook has finished compiling your Lookalike Audience. Your ad is then automatically published for you. You can check the status of your audience through the Details page for your ad.

Once your ad is live, Facebook users who aren't already on your contact list are presented with the opportunity to join your contact list, or engage with your organization through a webpage that you specify.
