Welcome Email and COI behaviors when using an API or a 3rd Party Integration/Plugin/Sign-Up form

Article: 000005903
Updated: February 6, 2025

Learn how Welcome emails and Confirmed Opt-in emails interact with an API for a sign-up form

Contact requirements for when a Welcome Email is sent:

  • If the contact is added with “create_source”=”Contact”, and is added to a list that qualifies for a Welcome Email, a Welcome Email is sent.
  • If the contact is added with “create_source”=”Account”,  a Welcome Email is NOT sent.
Note: New contacts added using either of the two “contact_import” bulk activity endpoints in the v3 API only have the “create_source”=”Account” option, as they function similarly to uploading a file to contacts, and so contacts added this way are not sent Welcome Emails. Learn more.

Contact requirements for when a COI email is sent:

  • If Confirmed Opt-in is enabled for the account, any contacts added with “create_source”=”Contact”, must confirm their subscription..
  • New contacts added using either of the two contact_import bulk activity endpoints with “create_source”=”Account”,  are not sent Confirmed Opt-in emails.

The “create_source” is specified within the integration’s code, and can only be edited by the developer of the integration.

The “create_source” can also be viewed in the UI. When viewing a contact entry in your account, you're able to see whether they are listed as: “Subscribed [date] by You” (“create_source”=”Account”), or “Subscribed [date] by Contact” (create_source”=”Contact”).

If the create source of the integration/plugin/3rd party form does not add contacts as “create_source”=”Contact”, it is recommended to use one of Constant Contact’s pre-built forms, or find a different 3rd Party Integration/Plugin/Sign-Up form that better meets your needs.
