How to Add Alt Text to Images and GIF Posts

Article: 000054670
Updated: November 12, 2025

Adding alt text to your images and GIFs makes your social media posts more inclusive by ensuring that visually impaired users who rely on screen readers can understand the content. Ready Social makes it easy to add and customize alt text across different platforms, helping you make your posts accessible to everyone.

Here is a step-by-step process of how to add alt text to images and GIF posts via Ready Social:

  1. Start by going to the Create Post section in Ready Social.
  2. Upload an image or GIF from your local device, Google Drive, Dropbox, or Box. You can also choose stock images through Unsplash integration.
  3. Below the Post Composer, you will see a checkbox labeled Alternate Text. Check this box to enable alt text.

  4. A text field will appear where you can enter your descriptive alt text. Make sure your description clearly conveys the content of the image or GIF.

  5. Ready Social allows you to tailor alt text for each platform. If you are scheduling the same post across multiple platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest), you can switch between platform tabs and customize the alt text to meet the specific requirements of each platform.

  6. Select the social media accounts where you would like to publish the post.
  7. Once you have added and customized the alt text, schedule your post as usual. The alt text will be included across all the selected platforms.

⚠️ Important Notes: Supported Platforms for Alt Text:

  • Images: Alt text can be added for images on Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, and Pinterest.
  • GIFs: Alt text can be added for GIFs on Twitter and LinkedIn.

    Character Limits for Alt Text:

  • Facebook: 8000 characters
  • Instagram: 1000 characters
  • Twitter: 1000 characters
  • Pinterest: 500 characters

If your alt text exceeds the character limits set by the platform, Ready Social will notify you, and the post will not be scheduled until the alt text is edited to fit within the allowed limits.
