Troubleshooting issues when your event registrants are calling to say they can't pay for your event registration with PayPal

If you are hearing back from your event registrants that they are unable to pay for your event registration with PayPal, you might need to update some of your PayPal settings. Consider using a business account and enabling "Account Optional" for your payments. Here's how:

Change your personal PayPal account to a Business account

PayPal recommends that merchants set up a Business account. To switch from a Personal account to a Business account:

  1. Log in to PayPal and click on the gear to get to your Profile page.
  2. Click Account.

Settings icon in the top right corner and Account tab button on the left in the submenu

  3. Scroll down to the Account Options section and click "Upgrade to a Business account."

  4. Click Next.

  5. Choose the business structure that fits best.

  6. Decide whether you'd like to create a new, separate Business account or upgrade your existing account to a Business account, then click Next.

Note: If you're creating a new business account, you're also prompted to enter the email address and to create a password.

Enter your business information, review PayPal's policies, and click Agree and convert account. For more information about converting to a business account, please see PayPal's support.

Check the PayPal account optional setting in your Business account

When the "account optional" feature is enabled, customers don't need to sign in to a PayPal account when they check out. Instead, they use an alternative checkout and can sign up for a PayPal account afterward. Customers with PayPal accounts still log in to their PayPal accounts to check out.

  1. Log in to your PayPal business account, then click your Profile icon > Settings.

Expanded profile menu in the top right with Settings icon

  2. Under the Product & Services section, click Website Payments
  3. Next to Website preferences, click Update

Blue Update button in Website Payments section selected on the left side menu

  4. Scroll down to the PayPal account optional section and select "On."

On button under PayPal Account Optional section
