Troubleshooting issues when your event registrants are calling to say they can't pay for your event registration with PayPal

If you are hearing back from your event registrants that they are unable to pay for your event registration with PayPal, you might need to update some of your PayPal settings. Here are a couple of places to check:

Change your personal PayPal account to a Business account

PayPal recommends that merchants set up a Business account. To switch from a Personal account to a Business account:
  1. Log into PayPal and click on the gear to get to your Profile page.
  2. Click Account.
  3. Scroll down to the Account Options section and click "Upgrade to a Business account."

Gear icon, Account tab, Account options section, and Upgrade to a Business account link

  4. Select which email address you'd like to use with your business account and then click Next.
Note: If you're creating a new business account, you're also prompted to enter the email address and to create a password.

  5. Enter your business and contact information into the fields.
  6. Review PayPal's policies and check the box to agree to them.
  7. Click Agree and Upgrade Account.

Check the PayPal account optional setting in your Business account

When the "account optional" feature is turned on, customers don't need to sign into a PayPal account when they check out. Instead, they use an alternate checkout and have the option to sign up for a PayPal account afterward. Customers with PayPal accounts still log in to their PayPal accounts to check out.

  1. Log into your PayPal business account, then click your UsernameAccount Settings.
  2. Under the Product & Services section, click Website Payments.
  3. Next to Website preferences, click "Update."

  4. Scroll down to the PayPal account optional section and select "On."
