Create custom fields to store contact information that is in addition to the standard contact fields recognized by Constant Contact

Light Bulb IconDid you know? We're in the process of making improvements to our contact management experience and rolling them out to our customers. If your Contacts Dashboard looks different, view this article for creating and managing custom fields instead.

Constant Contact recognizes standard contact details, like an address, company name, or birthday, but custom fields let you get creative and collect your own additional contact details based on the unique marketing needs of your organization. Custom fields are commonly used for adding personalized information into the subject line and body of your emails and for segmenting your contact list. Here's everything you need to know to create and manage custom fields:

  1. In the menu on the left-hand side, click Contacts > All contacts.
  2. In the upper right-hand corner of the Contacts page, click . . .  > Manage custom fields.

Contacts menu expanded with All contacts option selected, Contact dashboard with All contacts table, Contacts menu expanded and Manage custom fields option expanded

  3. Choose to:

Create a new custom field

You can create up to 100 custom fields within your account. Keep in mind that any custom field you create is available for all of your contacts, even if they're not applicable to all of your contacts—it's totally fine to have blank custom fields in a contact record!

  1. Click the + Add custom field button.

  2. Add a name for your custom field into the Field name field. There is a 50 character limit for each name, and the name must be unique.
  3. From the Field type drop-down menu, select either:
  • Single line text - Text
  • Date - Text
  1. Click the Add field button.

Rename a custom field

If you have a custom field and the name isn't just quite right, you can change it at any time and it automatically applies to any contacts that were already assigned to the field. Renaming a custom field doesn't remove it from any of your contacts.

  1. Click the three dots on the right-hand side of the table, next to the custom field you want to rename and select the "Rename field" option.

Manage custom fields dashboard with Custom fields table, and custom field with menu expanded and Rename field option selected

  2. Enter a new name into the Field name field. There is a 50 character limit for each name, and the name must be unique.
  3. Click the Rename field button.

Delete a custom field

Exclamation Point IconImportant: If you have a sign-up form with custom fields that have been deleted, the field stays on the form until you edit it to remove the field. If a new contact fills out the field and submits the form, the new contact record is created, but the custom field information they provide isn't stored in the record.

To free up space for new custom fields, you can delete the custom fields you aren't using anymore. When you delete the field, all of the information associated with the field for each contact is removed from your account—it's a good idea to export your contact information before you delete the field if you want to keep a backup record of it.

  1. Click the three dots on the right-hand side of the table, next to the custom field you want to delete and select the "Delete" option.

Manage custom fields dashboard with Custom fields table, and custom field with menu expanded and Delete option selected

  2. Review the caution message and check the "I understand that this action cannot be undone" box.
  3. Click the Delete field button to confirm the action.

Delete field overlay with confirmation statement and check box, and Delete field button
