Before you can send SMS marketing messages, you need to have contacts in your account that have provided you with explicit consent/permission to receive those messages from you. Here are the different ways to grow your SMS marketing contact list through Constant Contact, with contacts that have opted into SMS marketing:
Your contact list can contain a mix of contacts that have opted into email marketing and have just an email address on file, contacts that have opted into SMS marketing and have just an SMS phone number on file, and contacts that have opted into both email and SMS marketing.
![]() | Get permission: Using SMS-enabled sign-up forms ensure that you receive and document express SMS marketing consent from your contacts, which satisfies Constant Contact's SMS permission policy as well as the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). |
Asking for consent gives you the highest quality contacts that are more likely to stick with you over time because they gave their permission to you to contact them. When you ask for SMS marketing consent, your contacts must opt-in themselves. For example, they must check a box on your Sign-up Landing Page (it can't be pre-selected for them) or initiate a request to join your list through text-to-join.
A Sign-up Landing Page is perfect for collecting new contacts online! When your SMS registration is approved, we automatically create a Sign-up Landing Page for you that can be shared in your emails, on your website, in social posts, in online ads, and more, to grow your SMS contact list. You can also create additional sign-up landing pages and enable them for SMS opt-in so you can customize them for different audiences. When new contacts join your list, they have the option to opt into email, SMS, or both.
Our text-to-join tool gives you a quick and easy way to grow your SMS contact list with consent online or offline! All you have to do is enable text to join in your account and then display and share the instructions to join your list. Contacts that join your list can opt-into SMS marketing or email and SMS marketing.
If you have contacts that opted into SMS marketing through another provider, you can add them into your Constant Contact account—you just need their SMS phone number and the date they provided their SMS consent. Contacts can be added or updated through a spreadsheet, and if you need to manually add a new contact, or a few contacts, you can also include the SMS phone number and consent information too. In addition, if you have existing contacts that opted into email marketing and have also opted into SMS marketing, you can edit their contact records and update the SMS phone number and consent status.
If you've been with Constant Contact for awhile, you probably already have contacts in your account that opted into email marketing, before SMS marketing was available. The good news is that we have a special template you can use to share an SMS-enabled Sign-up Landing Page and ask them to opt-in. If you'd rather, you can create your own email and insert an SMS-enabled Sign-Up Landing Page into the email too.
