How to set up client accounts: Partner managed vs. Partner referred

Article: 000044214
Updated: April 10, 2025

There are two ways to set up and get paid for new client accounts—the financial rewards are the same

You can refer business to Constant Contact and have Constant Contact’s coaches close the sale and retain the customer (partner referred), or you can fully own the client relationship (partner managed).

Partner referred

Referring business is an easy way for you to generate a passive income from Constant Contact. Just refer clients with your provided referral link, and we’ll close the sale and/or help them get started. All accounts opened by prospects after visiting your referral link will be credited to your partnership.

Your referral link can be found by logging in to your personal Constant Contact account—the one given to you when you became our partner.

  1. Click on the Accounts tab.
  2. Click the Home tab.
  3. Scroll down and copy the Partner Referral Link towards the bottom of the page.

Light Bulb IconPro tip: Customize your referral link to choose which plans you want to highlight and if you want a “trial” and/or “buy now” experience. You can also add ?pn=yourpartnername to the end of any Constant Contact URL so all accounts opened up after visiting the URL will be credited to your partnership. Your partner name is after pn= in your referral link. Here are some example links that you can co-brand:
  • Constant Contact Blog Article:
    https://blog.constantcontact.com?pn=yourpartnername
  • Constant Contact Knowledge Base:
    https://knowledgebase.constantcontact.com?pn=yourpartnername

Promote your partner referral link or co-branded URLs on your website, social media accounts, email signature, printed marketing materials, and in any presentation decks if conducting training seminars. We’ve also created several fully-customizable email templates for you to use in promoting your referral link. They can be found in your personal Constant Contact account’s template picker under the “Partner Marketing” tab.

Partner managed

Planning to handle all Constant Contact-related work or conducting all marketing activities for your client? Set up your client as “Managed” by clicking the “Create An Account” button inside the Accounts tab. We’ll assume you own the client relationship—and won’t contact these account holders unless legally obligated to do so.

By categorizing an account as managed, you assume full ownership of the relationship. It is expected that you will:

  • Help the customer leverage the Constant Contact tools to meet their marketing goals, and provide ongoing 1:1 support and coaching.
  • Inform the customer of any changes to product features and other relevant updates.
  • Keep the customer an active, successful user.

Our Single Billing option allows you to pay for multiple managed client accounts with one payment each month. Pay for your clients’ accounts and then bill them separately for the cost, plus the services you provide. You have the flexibility to determine which accounts you want to have on Single Billing. You’ll receive an upfront discount on accounts, in place of the normal revenue share percentage.

Exclamation Point IconImportant: If you are using single billing, accounts must be managed to be added to your single billing.

Remember this about managed and referred client types:

  • Financial rewards for managed and referred accounts are the same.
  • Strictly referring accounts is an excellent way to generate passive income.
  • You can set clients up as a mix of managed and referred—whatever works best for you!
