View your unsubscribed contacts' feedback

Give your contacts the option to provide a reason when they unsubscribe from your email list, and use their feedback to write better email content and segment your list

Even the best marketers have contacts who unsubscribe and no longer want to receive their emails. When you allow contacts to provide a reason for why they're unsubscribing, you can get valuable feedback to improve your emails and your readers' experience.

Light Bulb IconDid you know? You can also give your contacts the option to remove themselves from specific email lists instead of unsubscribing altogether by customizing your Update Profile form. That way, when a contact does go through the unsubscribe process, they have the option to continue receiving occasional mailings based on their interests.

Allow feedback

Your contact may be unsubscribing from your email list, but it's the perfect time to get some valuable feedback from them! Here's how to enable the option for them to share their feedback with you so you can learn why they aren't sticking around:

  1. Click the three dots next to your profile name in the lower left-hand corner - or the profile icon if you have the left-hand menu collapsed - and select Account settings from the expanded menu.
  2. Click the Account details tab.

My Account page with Account details tab selected, and account owner menu expanded in lower left-hand-corner with Account settings option selected

  3. Scroll down to the Footer settings section and click Edit.

  4. Click the toggle switch next to the "Include "Unsubscribe" comment box" option to enable it.
  5. Click Save.

Now when your contacts click the "Unsubscribe" link in your email footer, they also have the option to give a reason for why they're unsubscribing. If they select "Other reason," a comment box displays to record any additional feedback they choose to submit.

Review the feedback

The Unsubscribed report includes the feedback from your unsubscribed contacts, if the departing contacts chose to provide any. It's even broken down by email so you can see if certain content might be driving unsubscribes.

  1. Click Reporting.
  2. Click the Emails tab.
  3. (Optional) use the drop-downs to select a date range to view your email stats and the time period to compare to, or use the fields to set custom date ranges.

  4. Scroll down to the Email campaigns section, review the Unsubscribes column, and click the hyperlinked number of unsubscribed contacts next to the email you want to review.

  5. Review the Reason column to see if there is any feedback from your unsubscribed contacts.
Note: Keep in mind that even with the option to let you know why they're leaving, some contacts may not have a reason and won't comment at all.

Make a plan

While not every unsubscribe reason is something you can address, combining the information with your overall unsubscribes reporting gives you valuable insights that can help reduce the number of future unsubscribes.

  • Was your content something that didn't relate to them? Try segmenting your lists so you can send more tailored messages, or change the way you present information in your emails.
  • Did they think you were sending too frequently? Experiment with a different schedule and watch your open rates to compare how the results differ.
