Removing inactive email or SMS contacts

Article: 000019239
Updated: January 3, 2025

Clean inactive contacts off of your contact lists by removing contacts without email addresses or email and SMS contacts with "unsubscribed," "no permission set," or "awaiting confirmation" statuses

Inactive contacts don't count towards your billing and we prevent you from sending emails to them. Getting rid of inactive contacts helps keep your lists clean and manageable too.

  1. From the contacts dashboard, click the Contacts tab.

Contacts dashboard with Contacts tab selected

  2. To remove:

Unsubscribed contacts

"Unsubscribed" contacts are those that choose to opt-out of your contact list and stop receiving emails or SMS messages from you.

  1. Click All Statuses > Unsubscribed or SMS Unsubscribed.

Contact tab with Contacts tab selected, All statuses menu expanded and Email Status section with Unsubscribed option, and SMS status section with SMS Unsubscribed option

  2. Select all of the unsubscribed contacts.
  3. Click Actions > Delete.

Contacts tab, all unsubscribed contacts selected, Actions drop-down menu expanded, and Delete option selected

  4. Click Delete to confirm the action.

Delete Contacts overlay and Delete button

We still remember which contacts are in the "unsubscribed" status even after you delete them from your account. If you later import contacts and include an unsubscribed contact or two, we add them back to your list, but we keep them in the "unsubscribed" status. An unsubscribed contact can re-join your list at any time through one of our sign-up tools, or by opting back into SMS messages, and become an active contact again.

Contacts without permission to send

Contacts with "no permissions set" have given you their email addresses or SMS phone numbers, but haven't given permission to send email or text messages to them.

  1. Click Statuses > No Permission Set or SMS No permission set.

Contact tab with Contacts tab selected, All statuses menu expanded and Email Status section with No permission set option, and SMS status section with SMS No permission set option

  2. Select all of the contacts without permission.
  3. Click Actions > Delete.

Contacts tab, all no permission set contacts selected, Actions drop-down menu expanded, and Delete option selected

  4. Click Delete to confirm the action.

Delete Contacts overlay and Delete button

Contacts listed as awaiting confirmation

Contacts in the "awaiting confirmation" status have been sent the Confirmed Opt-in email or have received the SMS opt-in text message, but haven't responded to grant permission for you to email or message them. If it's been a little while since you sent the opt-in request, then these contacts are good candidates for removal.

  1. Click Statuses > Awaiting confirmation or SMS Awaiting confirmation.

Contact tab with Contacts tab selected, All statuses menu expanded and Email Status section with Awaiting confirmation option, and SMS status section with SMS Awaiting confirmation status option

  2. Select all of the contacts awaiting confirmation.
  3. Click Actions > Delete.

Contacts tab, all awaiting confirmation contacts selected, Actions drop-down menu expanded, and Delete option selected

  4. Click Delete to confirm the action.

Delete Contacts overlay and Delete button

If you delete a contact in the "awaiting confirmation" status and they later complete the confirmed opt-in process, we add the contact back to your account as an "active" contact so you can start sending emails or SMS messages to them. Contacts that complete the opt-in process have the "subscribed - confirmed" status, for email, and "SMS confirmed" status for SMS messages.

Contacts without an email address

An email address is now required for each contact in your account, but if you have old contacts without email addresses in your account, you can edit the contact record to add one, or if you don't know the email address, you can just delete them.

  1. Click on the "Email Address" column header to sort your contacts alphabetically by their email address. If you have any contacts without email addresses, they will be sorted to the very top or bottom of the table.

Contacts tab, Contacts tab, Email Address sort option, and contacts without email addresses sorted to the top

  2. Select all the contacts without email addresses.
  3. Click Actions > Delete.

Contacts tab, Contacts tab, contacts without email addresses selected, Actions drop-down menu expanded, and Delete option

  4. Click Delete to confirm the action.

Delete Contacts overlay and Delete button
